Dr. Beege Searches for a Residency

Hey folks,

So apparently I have been so busy over the last 6 months to post anything. It is sort of true. School has gotten extremely busy since the start of the new year. I don't really have any excuses before that. I did spend most of December and January researching, searching and applying for residency programs. While you don't have to complete a residency to be a pharmacist it does open a few doors. It would allow me to get a more clinical job meaning I would have patient interaction and maybe a little more input into a patient's care. It would also help me to get a clinical faculty position which is one career I think that I would enjoy.

So after thoroughly enjoying my geriatric rotation in June (see post in last July). I decided that I would like a residency that had a geriatric focus. There are basically 3 programs in the country that are a first year program with an emphasis in geriatrics (old people). There are another handful that would like you to have a one year general residency before you apply to their geriatrics specialty residency. the three programs are in Greenville, NC; Gainesville, FL and St. Louis MO. I applied to a few other programs, but only interviewed at those three. The way this works is a match program. So I rank the programs I would like to attend and the programs then rank the students that they would like. These ranks are then entered into a computer program (hopefully slightly less complicated than the BCS system) and you are then "matched" to a program and are obligated to attend that one. You could easily liken this to "match.com" or "ldssingles.org" for pharmacy residents.

So the big day that we find out where we will go for the next year is March 18th. If y'all are lucky then I will actually post the results on the blog when I find out. In the meantime take advantage of our poll and vote for where you would like us to end up next year.
